About Dietitian in Edmonton
Whether you’re looking for weight-loss, sports nutrition, developing healthy eating habits, or managing your nutrition-related chronic condition such as diabetes, heart disease, celiac, and others, I’m here to help! Why am I qualified? I’m a Registered Dietitian, Certified Personal Trainer/Personal Training Specialist and Craving Change Facilitator. What does all that mean? Let’s first talk about who is a Registered Dietitian? A Registered Dietitian is someone who completed at least 5 years at a reputable university, which involves an undergraduate degree in nutrition and at least 1 year of a dietetic internship- call it like hospital rotations in multiple areas. Look for the “Registered” as Registered Dietitian services are also covered by certain benefit plans or health care spending. Confirm your coverage with your insurance company. With regards to my education, I personally did a double major at the University of Alberta, then went on to complete my integrated dietetic internship. My first major is in food safety, production, engineering, and quality (Nutrition and Food Sciences major); while the second in clinical nutrition (Nutrition major). In my dietetic internship, I completed rotations in different areas such as weight management, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, surgery and ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in 2013. Since then I have worked in outpatient care nutrition counselling in mainly diabetes, weight-loss, and sports nutrition. I then decided to learn more about sports nutrition and the fitness industry because I felt in school the main focus was nutrition in managing chronic conditions. I spent countless hours researching by reading evidence-based articles on sports nutrition to better educate myself but that was not enough for me. I wanted to learn more. I went on to become a Certified Personal Trainer/Personal Training Specialist and then competed in novice bodybuilding while at the same time competing at the Worlds for salsa dancing! In addition to my research and becoming a CPT/PTS, it was going through the experience of being in both endurance (salsa dancing 2011-present, long distance running 2003-2007) and strength (novice bodybuilding 2018) sports that really helped me better understand the field. In 2018, I also completed a Certified Craving Change Facilitator course, which is all about managing emotional eating using a Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) approach. Most of my clients (90% or more!) struggle with some form of emotional eating; (I also did in the past) so my certification helped me learn more about the different strategies to manage emotional eating and develop a healthy relationship with food. In my nutrition counselling, I believe in a client-centered approach, involving clients in their care and goal-setting. I start with a one-hour full assessment to better get-to-know you and your specific needs, then conduct follow-ups accordingly! I’m very excited to help you reach your goals and have not had a single unhappy client! So contact me on my contact form and let’s get started!
